IT is the place to be!
Based on Eurostat’s 2022 report about ICT specialists in employment in the EU, it transpires that the number of IT professionals grew by 50.5 % in the last decade, almost 8 times as high as the increase (6.3 %) for total employment. Malta ranked 10th out of the 27 European countries in the proportion of ICT specialists in employment in 2021, and we can all agree that reflects our island’s tech reality.

IT within GO
The types of IT jobs available range from entry-level and junior roles, to more advanced positions. At GO we currently host a few students through our Youth Exposure Programme. This programme is designed to provide students with hands-on working experience in their field of studies. Their role is crucial in the running of their department and teams, and they are participating fully in various projects.
Our Networks Team takes care of core nodes and networks that deliver mobile, fixed and broadband services. The team ensures that all our networks and services are up and running, and also keeps abreast of latest developments to deliver the latest technologies to our customers.
The Project Management Team is involved in every single product and service we offer. For the hardware enthusiasts, we also have an IT Operations team, whose role spans from database operations management to DevOps and AppOps, information security, digital systems & infrastructure, assurance management and IT service management.
Have you ever wondered how the billing system works within GO? We have an entire team specialised in billing operations, ensuring that the systems communicate with each other and that the monthly bills have accurate information in them. Our billing systems analysts oversee the entire flow, make the necessary improvements and automate the process for each system to be feeding the right information to the others.
Lastly, we have a Video & Data Engineering Department, taking care of our multimedia and video operations and systems, and data engineering management. Most businesses and organizations are built on a foundation of data, be it customers, products, colleagues, networks, or anything which may provide business value and an example of how data engineering works with GO’s diverse data solutions, is how ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tools are used to design and build data pipelines, which support the business in its decision-making.
The aforementioned data pipeline’s main role is to extract data from homogenous or heterogenous sources, manipulate this data into a proper structure or format, that would be used to load into Data Marts, Data Lakes and/or Data Warehouses, and finally, have the data readily available for reporting, querying or machine learning. Similarly to this photo of our team strategising the next move in a laser tag team building activity, GO is able to take strategic decisions based on the available data.
GO’s data platform is constantly evolving, either through the growing requirements for any changes that our source systems bring, integration with new platforms that further enhance our business operation, or simply introducing diverse data solutions which further enrich our existing ones. This means we are constantly involved in the amalgamation of data from new and existing systems, and together with the help of the Business Team, we are able to deliver new insights to GO.
