How Telecoms Has Changed Everyone's Lives And Why You Should Be Part Of It

To begin with, let’s explain what telecoms is all about. The word telecommunications literally means "the sharing of information over a distance’’. Today telecommunications is a way of life, influencing the way we live, work, socialise, learn and rest. Telecommunications affects the how, where, when and the who of everyday living. It is pretty much an unavoidable part of our life, unless one lives in a cave and still wears dresses of skin or fur from an animal one hunted.

Telecoms plays a critical role in the shaping of society, culture, as well as business and economics. All of us working in the industry, in whatever capacity, are part of this revolution. While traditional telecommunications networks allowed us to cross time and distance barriers and shaped consumer demands, today, the tables have somewhat turned. It is customer behavior that is driving innovation and evolving trends. We live and breathe innovation and our goal is to connect our customers to what matters most to them, in ways that are convenient to their respective lifestyles, no matter where they are in the world.

How does the magic happen?

There are two sides to what we do: on one side there's everything our customers see and experience, such as all the hardware, including fixed-line telephones, broadband modems to mobile devices and TV, and on the other side there's the architecture and infrastructure that transforms data in to words, audio and video to be shared worldwide and which translate cutting edge technology into the first class services our customers get to enjoy.

We are focusing on the roll-out of high-speed TrueFibre network that delivers computer-based data applications such as broadband information services and interactive entertainment over mobile networks. All this is done by our amazing, highly skilled and technology passionate GO team, who obsess about our customers and the quality of service we offer to them.

The telecoms wave of change in our lives

To put you into perspective of how incredible it is to work in our industry, let’s see how telecoms changed the world in the last few decades. These are all things you know about, we are just connecting the dots to highlight the impact you can have in people’s lives.

1. High speed wireless internet is our ultimate growth factor. Our customers demand data connectivity of the best quality, at all times. Very early on we focused our attention on rolling out a TrueFibre internet network. This made us the highest investor in Malta’s digital infrastructure. We also invested heavily in our international links, ensuring Malta is connected to the rest of the world with sufficient redundancy measures in place. We are in fact the first and only Maltese operator to have three submarine cables which link the island to the World Wide Web via a fibre network.

2.
Research has shown that in 2019 adults spent roughly 3 hours and 30 minutes per day using their mobile internet, to work, socialize, shop online, settle accounts and other personal errands, learn new skills and find information to what they’re looking for. GO offers Smart WiFi, mobile bundles and Internet on the Move options to support one's daily needs. We really do our utmost to leave no one behind. What’s exciting is that GO employees benefit from unlimited data, calls, SMSes all year round. Can you imagine what it feels to never run out of data or spend hours on the phone with your bestie? How could we not offer them this benefit? At the end of the day, it’s them that design the network, install our client’s connection, support our clients’ needs and make it all happen; we simply cannot allow them not to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

3. AI and automation is key for telecoms. Emerging technologies such as machine learning and AI are a few of the things we are heavily investing in at the moment to keep one step ahead of the game. Devices that talk to each other, gather and analyse information in order to help us take the best course of action, be more efficient in how we do things, save time and money are what we are looking into with our Digital team.

4.
The telecoms technology opened the door for cryptocurrency and digital cash, because of the knowledge telecoms have in digital asset ecosystems. Another great innovation and technological advancement that telecoms supported.

5. Do you know someone who doesn’t have a phone? Over 66% of the world’s population has a mobile device and according to GSMA’s real-time intelligence data, now that you are reading this article, there are 5.22 billion people worldwide that have a mobile device. Who wouldn’t want to be part of an industry that literally connects half of the word’s population!
